Are you on the go from the moment you wake up? Your head may fill with panic as you open your eyes in the morning and take your first leap out of bed thinking of your To Do list. Your feet might not have even touched the ground before you’re holding that cup of coffee for an instant energy fix as you juggle your morning tasks. You may not even remember the last time you sat down to just BE. There’s too much to be done to sit down.
Is this sounding like the average day for you?
With many of the women I work with, stress is playing a major role in their mindset, energy levels, waistline and their overall wellbeing. Their nervous system is in need of some care and attention.
When our nervous system is unbalanced and we spend too much time in Flight or Fight, our body is stressed. This stress affects the way our body functions on a daily basis. We are unable to have restorative sleep, our body is unable to burn fat as fuel and we can let the joy of life just pass us by. Our life becomes a series of short term emergencies all rolling into one after another or even at the same time. We perceive everything in our life as urgent even when it isn’t’. Our bodies have to function on full alert until we can’t and we burn out. Our bodies are not made for this level of prolonged stress.
Below is a checklist to see if your body is on high alert…
If you have answered YES to many of these then it’s time to approach your health in a holistic way, focusing not just on your physical health but your emotional health and mindset.
I have coached women who have put their body through the extremities to lose a few inches, coming from a place of deprivation, punishment and fear. They are left feeling miserable and knowing they can’t sustain this.
One reason many struggle to loose fat is because we are living so much in the ‘Flight or Fight’ mode. Our nervous systems are unbalanced.
We are living in an ever increasing demanding world and it can be so hard to get yourself out of the DOING and embrace the BEING and our bodies enjoying time in the other mode of the nervous system – Rest and Restore. What colour is the sky? Can I hear the birds singing in the morning? How did I even drive to work?
Being in the Flight or Fight mode is sucking the life out of us and encouraging CHRONIC STRESS.
A bit of the science here….
What’s happening in your body? In this fight or fight mode, we are living in survival. We need an instant surge of energy for our muscles as our body thinks we are in danger and we need to escape. Our body obtains energy to move either by burning fat or by burning glucose. In the Flight or Fight mode, the quickest way is through glucose. Fat offers a slow release form of energy whereas glucose is a fast release form. We burn fat beautifully in the Rest and Restore mode of our nervous system.
If we don’t have the glucose in our bloodstream, our bodies will hunt down the glucose in the muscle. (There is a biochemical process that goes on here but we won’t go into that.) So you eat into your muscle tissue to get the energy to get your body out of danger.
If we are continuously signalling to your body that you are stressed physically or psychologically, your body will not burn fat!
Once we balance our nervous system into the Rest and Digest mode with mindfulness practices and deep diaphragmic breathing we are going to help our body burn fat! When you are in a relaxed state your body finds its natural energy by burning fat. We also absorb more nutrients as our body is not focused on quick energy to move the muscles to get away from danger. It’s free to nurture your digestive system. More absorption = more energy!
There are so many other benefits too……..
By taking part in regular mindfulness practices is a way of helping your nervous system move from being predominantly in the Flight and Fight mode and helping to transition it to the Rest and Restore mode.
So when you wake up in the morning, take a few deep breaths. It’s not just helping your mind, its helping your waistline.
The world we live in can be so fast and we can all be guilty of rushing and thinking we can do it all. Without our health and wellbeing our world can crumble but with energy and vitality the world around us is so much brighter and we can show up to the world in a different way, a way our loved ones deserve.
