Mindset is something I love to talk about when it comes to women’s fitness. Most of the time when I first meet a client, they are struggling with the mindset. They want to do the exercise but they don’t know how to begin or don’t even think they are capable.
When we work together on the mindset, the changes really happen.
I was listening to a recent podcast, something I love to do, and I loved the concept of the Fixed and Growth Mindset. It’s a theory Carol Dweck came up with over 30 years ago.
We’ll use exercise for an example and let’s say you have never exercised before. If you have a FIXED mindset, you’ll think that you’ll never be able to exercise the way you see others exercise and that you’re just not an active person. You decide it’s not for you and use it as an excuse not to start, even though you know it would be good for you. We’ve all done this with some area of our life.
A person with a GROWTH mindset would approach it differently. I know I need to exercise, I don’t have the skills so I need to learn HOW and put the effort in. So they may hire a Personal Trainer, join a fitness class or ask an experienced friend for help.
When you believe that you can make a change, the change will happen through the know-how and continuous effort.
Change is scary and our mind does not like change. We can procrastinate with change because it protects us from failing. This is so normal and we can all slip into this way of thinking but by knowing what your mind is doing and becoming aware of its thoughts, we can change it and change the way we act. I was terrified of launching my online training and putting myself out there – Where on earth do I start! But I’m here after getting over the procrastination!
So how do we move our minds into the Growth MINDSET?
Learn to hear the Fixed Mindset
When you are leaning towards making a change that little fixed mindset voice will say…
‘That’s just not for you!’
‘What if you fail?’
‘You just don’t have the time or the ability!’
Once you hear the inner critic get louder you know that it’s just the fixed mindset coming in. Once you are aware, it can be quite funny listening to the reasons why you shouldn’t do it!
Take control over those thoughts and choose not to engage or take action on them. You have the choice and control.
Talk back to that voice with reason…
‘Thanks for reminding me you’re a scared of failure but remember failure is part of change and your ready for the challenge. I just need to learn how and keep putting in the effort.’
The fixed mindset will keep chattering away and it will take more than once to silence it but it will get easier! It’s completely normal to talk to yourself, we all do it!
Put in the time and effort to learn, adapt when it doesn’t quite work out the way you thought and to keep moving forwards.
I hope this has got you thinking a little into how your mind like to work. The more thought work you do the easier it gets to notice and bring yourself out of that FIXED though process. These limiting thoughts are not unique and they can pop up in anyone’s head. It’s up to you how you want to act on those thoughts.
Your thoughts control your feelings and your feelings control your ACTIONS!
